NEW TRAINING COURSES FOR YOUTH WORKERS IN DONEGAL TO DELAY EARLY SEX AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE
Limited number of free places available for NYCI training in Donegal Town this February
February 3rd 2010 – A new training course which aims to provide youth workers with information and skills to assist them in encouraging teenagers to delay early sex will be held in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd February. The two-day ‘Leave it till Later’/ Delay Training course will be delivered by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) with funding from the HSE Crisis Pregnancy Programme (formerly the Crisis Pregnancy Agency). The training course is available free of charge to those working with young people in a youth work, out-of-school or non-formal education setting and will explore the concept of delaying early sex among young people.
A limited number of places are still available for this course and can be booked by contacting the NYCI at 01-478 4122.
The training course is a strand of the Crisis Pregnancy Programme’s ‘b4 u decide’ initiative which was launched December to encourage teenagers to delay early sexual activity.
Máire Ni Chuireáin and Sorcha Cusack, members of Donegal Youth Council sat on the advisory committee for the development of the initiative.
Ms. Ni Chuireáin, commented: “The www.b4udecide.ie website gives young people the information and support they need to develop healthy relationships for the future. It will really benefit Irish teenagers because there are so many myths about relationships and sex and this website gives us the facts.”
The website also provides information for parents, teachers and youth workers on forming healthy relationships, dealing with peer pressure and why it’s better for young people to wait until they are older before having sex for the first time.
‘Leave it Till Later’/ Delay training courses will be held at 14 locations throughout Ireland in 2010. The courses aim to:
- Look at the causes and effects of early sex and current research findings.
- Understand the role played by the media and peer pressure in influencing young people’s decision making.
- Explore a range of ways of working with young people to help them make positive and healthy decisions for themselves.
- Impart skills which can be passed onto young people in how to say ‘No’ and resist pressure.
- Explore the role of friendship in the development of healthy relationships.
ENDS.
